#FRIDAYFIVE: Five Upcoming Releases To Add To Your TBR Pile

May 26, 2017

Bookworms everywhere know that the to be read pile is a mystical mountain of books that never seems to diminish despite hours spent reading. You would think that would discourage the purchase of more books, but no. If you're anything like me you start getting antsy when your TBR falls into double digits.

So if your TBR is looking a little sparse, or you just need something new to add to your Everest of books here are five upcoming YA new releases to add to your collection:

One Of Us Is Lying - Karen McManus

One of Us Is Lying is the story of what happens when five strangers walk into detention and only four walk out alive. Everyone is a suspect, and everyone has something to hide.

Pay close attention and you might solve this.
On Monday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention.
Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule.
Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess.
Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for dealing.
Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher.
And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High’s notorious gossip app.

Only, Simon never makes it out of that classroom. Before the end of detention Simon's dead. And according to investigators, his death wasn’t an accident. On Monday, he died. But on Tuesday, he’d planned to post juicy reveals about all four of his high-profile classmates, which makes all four of them suspects in his murder. Or are they the perfect patsies for a killer who’s still on the loose?

Everyone has secrets, right? What really matters is how far you would go to protect them.

I feel like I have been waiting for this book ever since I first saw The Breakfast Club. I absolutely love that movie and this is loosely based on it with a murder thrown in so I'm excited. Bouncing off walls excited. I see a YouTube video in my future that is me serenading a copy One Of Us Is Lying with Simple Minds playing in the background just to accurately convey all my feelings.

The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue - Mackenzi Lee

An unforgettable tale of two friends on their Grand Tour of 18th-century Europe who stumble upon a magical artifact that leads them from Paris to Venice in a dangerous manhunt, fighting pirates, highwaymen, and their feelings for each other along the way.

Henry “Monty” Montague was born and bred to be a gentleman, but he was never one to be tamed. The finest boarding schools in England and the constant disapproval of his father haven’t been able to curb any of his roguish passions—not for gambling halls, late nights spent with a bottle of spirits, or waking up in the arms of women or men.

But as Monty embarks on his grand tour of Europe, his quest for a life filled with pleasure and vice is in danger of coming to an end. Not only does his father expect him to take over the family’s estate upon his return, but Monty is also nursing an impossible crush on his best friend and traveling companion, Percy.

Still it isn’t in Monty’s nature to give up. Even with his younger sister, Felicity, in tow, he vows to make this yearlong escapade one last hedonistic hurrah and flirt with Percy from Paris to Rome. But when one of Monty’s reckless decisions turns their trip abroad into a harrowing manhunt that spans across Europe, it calls into question everything he knows, including his relationship with the boy he adores.

Witty, romantic, and intriguing at every turn, The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue is a sumptuous romp that explores the undeniably fine lines between friendship and love.

Am I allowed to admit that I want this book because of the fun cover? Or maybe it's the fun blurb? Either way The Gentleman's Guide To Vice And Virtue has me intrigued. There's highwaymen, pirates, a roguish hero with a love story thrown in. What's not to love?

Once And For All - Sarah Dessen

Louna, daughter of famed wedding planner Natalie Barrett, has seen every sort of wedding: on the beach, at historic mansions, in fancy hotels and clubs. Perhaps that's why she's cynical about happily-ever-after endings, especially since her own first love ended tragically. When Louna meets charming, happy-go-lucky serial dater Ambrose, she holds him at arm's length. But Ambrose isn't about to be discouraged, now that he's met the one girl he really wants.

Sarah Dessen’s many, many fans will adore her latest, a richly satisfying, enormously entertaining story that has everything—humor, romance, and an ending both happy and imperfect, just like life itself.

I'm going to be honest and say that Sarah Dessen could probably write an instruction manual and I would buy it. She is one of my go to contemporary YA authors and I have yet to read anything by her that I hate. I'm sure Once And For All will continue this tradition because the cynical daughter of a wedding planner sounds like someone I would like.

Eliza And Her Monsters - Francesca Zappia

Eighteen-year-old Eliza Mirk is the anonymous creator of Monstrous Sea, a wildly popular webcomic, but when a new boy at school tempts her to live a life offline, everything she’s worked for begins to crumble.

In the real world, Eliza Mirk is shy, weird, smart, and friendless. Online, Eliza is LadyConstellation, the anonymous creator of a popular webcomic called Monstrous Sea. With millions of followers and fans throughout the world, Eliza’s persona is popular. Eliza can’t imagine enjoying the real world as much as she loves her digital community. Then Wallace Warland transfers to her school, and Eliza begins to wonder if a life offline might be worthwhile. But when Eliza’s secret is accidentally shared with the world, everything she’s built—her story, her relationship with Wallace, and even her sanity—begins to fall apart. With pages from Eliza’s webcomic, as well as screenshots from Eliza’s online forums, this uniquely formatted book will appeal to fans of Noelle Stevenson’s Nimona and Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl

I'm ashamed to say that Eliza And Her Monsters wasn't really a book that was on my TBR radar. I had heard about it but it wasn't going to be one of my must buy now books. Then someone with an ARC shared a two line snippet on Instagram. I get it now, so if everyone could please stop teasing me now that would be great. Some of us won't be getting this book till June because of delivery times.

Bad Romance - Heather Demetrios

Grace wants out. Out of her house, where her stepfather wields fear like a weapon and her mother makes her scrub imaginary dirt off the floors. Out of her California town, too small to contain her big city dreams. Out of her life, and into the role of Parisian artist, New York director—anything but scared and alone.

Enter Gavin: charming, talented, adored. Controlling. Dangerous. When Grace and Gavin fall in love, Grace is sure it's too good to be true. She has no idea their relationship will become a prison she's unable to escape.

Deeply affecting and unflinchingly honest, this is a story about spiraling into darkness—and emerging into the light again.

I will read Bad Romance because it is by Heather Demetrios and I love her contemporaries, but... I will read it knowing that I'm going to need a box of tissues and spend days afterwards in an emotional wasteland. Demetrios never shies away from the ugly, she meets it head on in a way that is almost too real. So as much as I'm looking forward to this book I am also hesitant because I tend to resemble Gimli after too much to drink when I cry.

I know I've missed a few great YA new releases like Our Dark Duet which should be amazing so I'll hopefully do another five in a couple of weeks. 2017 seems to be the year for YA fiction. What's an upcoming release that you cannot wait to read? Leave a comment below with your recommendation.
